The Hadassah Aids Center is setting up a demonstration project
in a large clinic in Addis Ababa where prevalence of aids is extremely
high. Ethiopia is the third largest country in terms of aids-infected
population. 10% of the 60 million are infected, the majority with
HIV Type A.
The project will introduce Aids medicines to a large controlled
aids-infected population who will receive its medical treatment in
that clinic. It will also involve staff education and training in
all aspects required to achieve the project goals.
This project is run as a collaborative effort by the Hadassah Aids
Center in Jerusalem with a team of Ethiopian physicians in Addis Ababa.
As a vaccine trial site in an area infected with HIV type A it will
be of much importance in the fight against the most infectious type
of HIV. This type of Aids is also found in South Africa, East Africa,
China and India.
The project is being submitted for evaluation by the Hadassah Aids
Center to The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
This Ethiopian-Israeli Medical Research Project (EIMRP) was seed
funded by the Israeli Foreign Ministry, but now wishes to receive
funding from a series of new donors.
